THE MANOR, 1349
They moved to the country manor in the autumn of
1349, when plague was still raging through the city. Lucy went downstairs to prepare the hot cocoa that
would be the last hot drink of the season, ruefully spiking
the liquid with Nytol, just one tablet dissolved in a little
warm water. "
"Never mind," returned the stranger, dismounting; "you'll recollect me by and
by, I've no doubt. Her father—man of rock—had never needed her,
whereas Hoddy, even if he did not love her, would always be needing her. Maggot; "but I don't see a
spoon. "
Trenchard, meanwhile, whose gaze was fixed upon the boy, became livid as
death, but he moved not a muscle. She had,
by the magic of recollection, set the picture of the typhoon between herself and
her table companions: the terrible rollers thundering on the white shore, the
deafening bellow of the wind, the bending and snapping palms, the thatches of
the native huts scattering inland, the blur of sand dust, and those two outcasts
defying the elements.
