impulse to hurry this rather pathetic derelict on his way?
CHAPTER XV
Previous to his illness, Spurlock's mind had been tortured by an appalling worry,
so that now, in the process of convalescence, it might be compared to a pool
which had been violently stirred: there were indications of subsidence, but there
were still strange forms swirling on the surface—whims and fancies which in
normal times would never have risen above sub-consciousness. "Come with me, my love, come—come," cried his mother, seizing his hand, and
endeavouring to force him away. And mind he
doesn't stir out of your sight, on any pretence whatever, till I call. He was always visualizing the Hand whenever he let his gaze rest upon
the horizon. “Broken-in people! I suppose the world is just all egotistical children and
broken-in people. Each morning his inquiry was properly answered: the
patient was steadily improving, but none could say when he would be strong
enough to proceed upon his journey. "You repeated the word 'Fool' over and over. "Enschede!" he called. Over here men drink because they are lonely; and when they drink too hard
and too long, they wind up on the beach.
