. Chapter XXIII
MONTAGUE HILL SEES LIGHT AT LAST
At exactly ten minutes past ten Annabel rang the bell of her sister’s flat. "A miserly old woman. He had been gone entirely one day, for yesterday afternoon he had
departed from Remenham House, and she had waited with patience like a saint,
and now it was again the afternoon. ”
“And if you are a millionaire like Drummond,” someone remarked, “you send
round a note and ask her to come out to supper. Men are always doing it, and if you set up to be a
man—”
“No, it’s absolutely out of the question, Mr. "
"You do not remember me, I dare say," observed the stranger. But I am afraid I am a shockingly obstinate and a very
ungrateful person. Quilt's manner, indeed, was that of a man endeavouring to muster up sufficient
resolution for the commission of some desperate crime. "You remember that starling, Sir Rowland," he said maliciously, "and what
occurred on it, twelve years ago?"
"Too well," answered the knight, frowning. But something
instinctive prevented that, and with the finest resolve not to be “silly” and
prudish she found that whenever he became at all bold in this matter she became
severely scientific and impersonal, almost entomological indeed, in her method;
she killed every remark as he made it and pinned it out for examination. But, what is it! What did you promise?"
"To offer you my heart, my hand, my life," replied Kneebone, falling at her feet.
